Volunteering

Let us count the ways . . .

As we move into another year, New York Insight would like to thank those sangha members who were so generous with their time, creative energy, and presence - the volunteers.

A little history: in 1997 a group of like-minded individuals committed to realizing their vision of a center to help cultivate awareness and foster a contemplative life right in the heart of one of the world’s busiest cities.

To achieve this vision, NYI is an almost entirely volunteer-run organization. To help deliver our programs, we have always relied heavily on a small but committed group of people. In return, these dedicated individuals have the satisfaction of knowing NYI couldn’t exist without them.

These volunteers assist in almost every way possible: from answering voicemails, updating the website, and creating monthly flyers to cleaning the center and opening and closing the center for events and weekly sits.  Many of them have been with New York Insight since the beginning and many serve in more than one capacity.

New York Insight would like to acknowledge the following people who made 2011 a great year.  We bow in deep gratitude to your continued generosity, support & practice.

On behalf of Joseph Schmidt, Executive Director; Dalila Bothwell, Deputy Director; and the NYI Board of Directors and Teachers - THANK YOU!

All the Summer 2011 Days of Service and Painting Volunteers

New York Insight Meditation Center has had a growing response to its programs over the years. Thousands of New Yorkers have had an opportunity to deepen their meditation practice and be part of a growing spiritual community. Our offerings continue to expand with a variety of retreats courses, workshops, sitting groups, and even residential retreats.

NYI is an almost entirely volunteer-run organization. To help deliver these programs, we have always relied heavily on a small but committed group of people. In return, theses dedicated individuals have the satisfaction of know NYI couldn’t exist without them. To fully support NYI’s operation and facilitate our vision, we also need your help.

We’re appealing to the members of the NYI community to come forward and offer their talent and expertise, their creativity and energy to help us continue to grow and flourish. Becoming involved in NYI and offering service is also an excellent way to cultivate generosity, or dana, as a spiritual practice.

Opportunities to do service are ever-changing and ongoing. What do you have to offer?
We welcome your new ideas as well as your resources and talent! If you think you may be interested in volunteering with NYI, please print and fill out a Volunteer Application and drop it off at the center or mail it to NYIMC, 28 West 27th Street, New York, NY, 10001. You will be contacted within a few weeks.

FLOOR CARE VOLUNTEER

Do walking meditation while offering service to the Dharma!

New York Insight is looking for a Floor Care volunteer to sweep and dust mop our floors twice a month; and once a month, to wet mop.  Cleaning would take place when the center is not being used, so a flexible schedule is necessary.  This person would work alone but as a vital part of our housekeeping volunteer staff.

Supplies provided. Commitment is for one year.

Position begins at the beginning of the year.

Contact volunteers@nyimc.org if interested in serving in this way.
