In-Person and Online: Dharma Rhythms Summer Music Festival – All About the Bass

featuring John Ferrara, Marty Jaffe Trio, Jeremiah Hosea, and Marguerite Cox

Saturday, August 29th, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm ET

In-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street, 12th Floor

Art has always held a special place in our New York City sangha, and this summer we’ve celebrated that spirit with a season of community music offerings. We close out the series with our biggest night yet: “All About the Bass” gives the spotlight entirely to the low end, bringing together four exceptional bass musicians — John Ferrara, Marty Jaffe, Jeremiah Hosea, and Marguerite Cox — for an evening of solo and ensemble sets spanning classical, jazz, and fusion traditions. Each artist brings their own renowned voice to the instrument, from Marguerite Cox’s classical upright bass training to Marty Jaffe’s deep roots in the New York jazz scene, from John Ferrara’s unique tapping technique that conjures the sound of piano and percussion to Jeremiah Hosea’s expressive, soulful approach to the low end, making this our most anticipated performance of the summer.

Come settle in for an evening that’s as much about presence and listening as it is about rhythm — a chance to experience music the way we practice together: attentively, communally, and with an open heart.

This musical gathering is part of New York Insight’s Dharma Rhythms Summer Music Festival.

Teacher(s)

John Ferrara

From a creative New York upbringing to the forefront of modern bass innovation, John Ferrara has carved a distinct musical path. Ferrara is best known for his two-handed tapping technique and genre-defying work with the acclaimed world fusion group Consider the Source, his work as a Solo Artist and as founding member of the psychedelic prog band Mono Means One.

Ferrara has gained worldwide recognition for his unorthodox approach to writing and performing which he accomplishes largely by utilizing the two-handed tapping technique. John has gained overwhelming praise in the bass community by prominent figures like Charles Berthoud, who labeled him the “Unsung Genius of Bass Tapping” and has recently shared the stage with bass legends Michael Manring at Solo Bass Night Chicago and Tony Levin’s Stickmen. His approach alters the instrument’s role into something more akin to a piano or classical guitar. Where Ferrara’s take on the bass guitar showcases his technical proficiency, his ethos as an artist is strictly to serve an emotional end, making his compositions both comprehensible and palatable to wider audiences. Bob Boilen, the founder and former host of NPR’s Tiny Desk concert, considered his performance “Jaw dropping” during NPR’s “Top Shelf Pick” nomination in 2022.

Marty Jaffe

One of New York City’s most versatile and highly sought after bassists, Marty Jaffe has performed extensively with world-renowned artists such as Samara Joy, Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Catherine Russell, George Coleman, Sullivan Fortner, Peter Cincotti, Karrin Allyson, and Laura Anglade, among others. When not in NYC, Marty tours extensively throughout the US and world with these artists and other collaborators including pianists Ben Rosenblum, David Meder, and his own groups.

Marty was born into a family of extraordinary musicians, including his father Andy Jaffe, a prominent pianist, composer, and educator. He grew up in Conway, Massachusetts and moved to New York City to attend Columbia and Juilliard, where he studied under musical giants Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Ray Drummond, Frank Kimbrough, and Kenny Washington. His accolades include being named a 2012 Presidential Scholar in the Arts and winning the International Society of Bassists’ jazz competition in 2013.

Marty is active as a bandleader and has presented his original music at venues such as The New World Center for the Arts, Mezzrow, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. He currently co-leads an innovative trio TONE FOREST, with longtime collaborators Miro Sprague (piano) and Jason Ennis (7-string Brazilian classical guitar). Their debut album, self-titled Tone Forest, released in August 2024, features original compositions by each member that blend influences from jazz, Brazilian music, classical music, free improvisation and more. They will release their second album in 2027.

Jeremiah Hosea

Founder of Earthdriver, Jeremiah Hosea has toured with Grammy-nominated blues/jazz legend James “Blood” Ulmer, first as part of his Raw Blues Experience and then as part of Memphis Blood, a project co-starring black rock pioneer Vernon Reid. Hosea has also toured with R&B, soul, and disco icon Gloria Gaynor; Ethiopian vocal sensation Ejigayayu Shawbabaw (Gigi), as part of her electric and acoustic ensembles; tabla beat master Karsh Kale; the Gee-Chee Goddess of Warrior Hardcore Soul Tamar-kali; violin virtuoso Lili Haydn; and the jam band Moon Boot Lover.

Marguerite Cox

Marguerite Cox, a double bassist from northeast Ohio, is a versatile and in-demand collaborator in numerous musical settings throughout the United States.

A recent alumna of Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect fellowship, she performs regularly with A Far Cry, Palaver Strings, and Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players, and counts forthcoming appearances with The Knights, AMOC*, East Coast Chamber Orchestra, Ruckus, Teatro Nuovo, and other chamber ensembles exploring music through the ages.

As an orchestral musician, she has appeared as a substitute with the Baltimore and Charleston Symphonies, held the principal bass position at Symphony in C from 2022 to 2024, and was a member of the 2023 Cabrillo Festival Orchestra; she was also a member of the inaugural NYO All-Stars Orchestra.
