June 5th, 2019 | 6:30-8:30pm

Note: Beginning on July 22nd, Insight Out will be held at NYIMC (10th Floor) on the 4th monday of each month.

Come join us for meditation and discussion to meet and socialize with other LGBTQI practitioners at NYI.

Our community is open to students of all Buddhist traditions, as well as those who are in the beginning stages of exploring their meditation practice and have an interest in the Dharma. All those who identify as LGBTQI are welcome.

We gather to form a multicultural community in which we can support each other in our practice with a commitment toward social change.

Fee by donation: Suggested starting donation is $15 but whatever you offer is greatly appreciated and no one is ever turned away for lack of funds.

Teacher(s)

karen g. williams

karen g. williams, Ph.D. (she/her) is on New York Insight’s Teachers Council and the board of Insight Meditation Society. She also co-chairs the Diversity, Equity and Liberation committee at New York Insight. In 2017 she graduated from the joint Insight Meditation Society and Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leader Training Program; and since then she has taught around the NYC metropolitan area, primarily in communities of color and in the LGBTQI community. karen is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Guttman Community College. Her research focuses on the carceral state and the aftermath of mass incarceration. Specifically, her scholarship examines how the institutionalization of evidence-based practices has ushered in a new wave of governance, one that synthesizes punitive power with systems of care within prisons. She brings mindfulness and meditative practices to her research and teaching to build compassionate engagement and to recognize the interconnectedness of all things. When karen is not writing or teaching, she can be found knitting or inhabiting her alter ego, “BackAlley Dred” (ohh, dare we talk about egos) who coaches junior roller derby.

Rae Houseman

Rae Houseman is a graduate of the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leadership Program, and has been meditating for more than fifteen years. She has practiced extensively in the Burmese methods of Mahasi Sayadaw and Sayadaw U Tejaniya. She holds a Masters degree in Somatic Psychology and she is a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. She is a member of the QTBLGAI2S community. Her personal practice is an integration of Somatic Awareness and Insight Meditation. Rae is the interim Guiding Teacher of VIMC.
