We live in times described as apocalyptic. This is a contemplation on the elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space, and Consciousness; on the meaning these elements bring to our deep dharma practice; and on the energy sources they can become for planetary social reconstruction.

The Buddha taught the Six Element Practice as a way of challenging our assumptions of separateness and permanence. In this practice, we reflect on the various “elements” that compose our being (solid matter, liquid, energy, gas, space, and consciousness itself) and see how each is a flow, rather than something fixed.

In this insight meditation practice, we come to see that every aspect of our being is in a permanent state of flux, and we learn how to appreciate the reality of our interconnectedness with the universe. It liberates us from a limited view of ourselves and helps us to see that we are nothing less than the universe becoming conscious of itself.
