Join us for a celebratory line up of performances featuring kirtan artist Nina Rao, four-time Emmy Award winning composer, guitarist and Buddhist Teacher, David Nichtern. Joining David will be keyboard wizard Matt Oestreicher performing songs from their recently released new album “Pandemoonia”. NYIMC Sangha favorite NYC Bassist John Ferrara will be performing pieces from his recently released solo album “A Lesson in Impermanence”. The day will include a unique contribution from ARKAI, an award-winning string duo that redefines the boundaries of musical genre. The renowned artist and meditation teacher Gregory Kramer will give a special talk on how dharma practice influences creativity in a talk entitled, “Art of Awakening: A Whole Life Path.”

Performers & Speakers:

Nina Rao learned traditional chants (bhajans) from her grandfather in a village in south India when she nine years old. The chants quietly stayed with her until she rediscovered chanting with Krishna Das in New York in 1996. In 2007, she recorded the track ‘Nina Chalisa’ on Krishna Das’ CD “Flow of Grace ” ; January 2013 she released her debut album, “Antarayaami – Knower of All Hearts”; August 2017 her second album “Anubhav” was released. Nina regularly leads kirtan, workshops, and retreats in her hometown of Brooklyn, New York and beyond.

David Nichtern is a songwriter, record producer, guitarist, and composer for film and television. A four-time Emmy award-winner and two-time Grammy-nominated composer, he is widely known for his classic song, “Midnight at the Oasis”. Throughout a diverse and colorful career, he has collaborated with a wide range of artists including Jerry Garcia, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Christopher Guest, Lana Del Rey, Brand New Heavies, Maria Muldaur, The McGarrigles, Patti LuPone, David Bromberg, Dr. John, Sultan Khan and Krishna Das.

Gregory Kramer is a composer, researcher, inventor, meditation teacher and author. In 1975 he co-founded Electronic Musicmobile, a pioneer synthesizer ensemble later renamed Electronic Art Ensemble, in which Kramer was a musician and the principal composer. He is also the Founding Teacher of the Insight Dialogue Community and has been teaching insight meditation since 1980. He developed the practice of Insight Dialogue and has been teaching it since 1995, offering retreats in North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia. In his most recent book, A Whole-Life Path: A Lay Buddhist’s Guide to Crafting a Dhamma-Infused Life, Gregory Kramer invites us to see the noise, complexity, and challenges of today’s world as doorways to fully embodied Dhamma wisdom.

Matt Oestreicher is a New York City based Bandleader and Producer who has been a consistent presence on the stage and on the tv screen. He has been the keyboardist, guitarist, arranger for the world famous Apollo Amateur Night Band for over a decade. Matt has performed with a who’s who list of international music artists including Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Snoop Dogg, Neil Diamond, and many, many others. He has performed on Broadway countless times, most recently as the music director and conductor for the revival of Smokey Joe’s Cafe on 42nd Street for which he was nominated for an Audelco Award for Outstanding Music Direction.

ARKAI is an award-winning string duo that redefines the boundaries of musical genre — fusing classical virtuosity with the electricity of a rock band, the spontaneity of a jazz combo, and the beauty of a string quartet. Graduates of The Juilliard School, their past engagements have included performances at The MET, Rockwood Music Hall, Lincoln Center, Chateau Marmont, Carnegie Hall and TED. In collaboration with seven-time Grammy-nominated producer Joel Hamilton, ARKAI’s debut album, Aurora, will be released in 2022. Learn more at arkaimusic.com.

John Ferrara’s style blends deep grooves, contrapuntal tapping, dense chords and classical Indian percussion, with shades of avant guard experimentation. He has earned a reputation as a renaissance bassist, pulling from many different techniques from slapping, to tapping to finger style. Ferrara has studied with South Indian Kanjira master Ganesh Kumar and has shared the stage with Victor Wooten, Otiel Burbridge, George Porter JR, as well as countless other bands in the Progressive rock Jazz fusion and Jam scenes.
