The height of summer is upon us, and this year has brought us personal and collective challenges in many ways. With all the upheavals we are going through, we are reminded of some undeniable facts of life: there is suffering, everything is always changing, all of life is interdependent, there are reasons we suffer, and it is possible to awaken through these difficult times. But how?

Many ancient cultures and traditions point to the wisdom of our natural world, encouraging us to let nature be our refuge, to let nature be our guide. In Chinese medicine, a system of healing influenced by various schools of thought, including Buddhism, the seasons and elements that exist “in nature” also exist within ourselves. The summer season is associated with the process of maturation. The buds that begin to grow in the spring explode into blossoms come summertime. Now is the time to explore how the experiences we have lived through this past spring might be asking to mature us.

The summer season is also associated with the element of Fire – a symbol of profound transformation. When our fire is lacking, we may feel disconnected from others, experience the world as cold and dark, feel stuck, and struggle to feel the warmth within ourselves and from others. When our fire is out of balance, we may feel ungrounded, anxious, scattered, and unable to settle.

Fire illuminates, warms, expands, spreads, proliferates, and burns aways impurities. A healthy expression of the “fire” within us is our ability to undergo deep transformations. We feel joyful, dynamic, spontaneous, and alive. We are rooted and expansive at the same time. We are attuned to the tenderness, strength, and voice of our heart – and are able to attune to the voices and hearts of others as well.

Join meditation teacher and acupuncturist Mona Chopra for this online program exploring these transformative teachings and practices to help us cultivate a healthy relationship to the fire element in our lives. Together we will engage in various practices including meditation, contemplative inquiry, movement (Qigong), journaling and acupuncture meridian visualization.
