Knowing the Body: A Path to Greater Happiness

“Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts.” ― Thich Nhat Hanh

It’s essential, as dharma students, that we learn to develop mindfulness of the body. The Buddha was clear and emphatic about this. If we practice mindfulness of the body, he said, we’ll be able to alleviate suffering and know a greater happiness.

The latest research in neuroscience and psychology confirm what the Buddha knew: if we’re able to cultivate an embodied awareness, we can make significant strides in our efforts to transform the mind and heart. It is true that making the journey to the body is not so easily accomplished. While most of us would rather not be “in the body”, the teachings of the Buddha, thankfully, provide us with skills that support us in our efforts to know the body.

In this daylong retreat, we’ll develop in our understanding of these important skills. The retreat will include meditation, practice activities, teaching, and discussion. It is suggested that participants have some experience in meditation and mindfulness.
