A grateful and appreciative life is a happy life.

On this three-evening workshop series we’ll explore the art of seeking what’s wholesome in ourselves and others—even in those we dislike or even hate.

The traditional Buddhist term for recognizing and appreciating the skillful qualities and actions is mudita. This is one of the “four divine abidings” of the Buddhist tradition, following on from kindness and compassion. Mudita is not simply “being happy because others are happy,” but rejoicing in the skillful qualities that give rise to peace and joy in the world. It’s “joyful appreciation.” To have mudita is to be appreciative.

Living with appreciation has long been seen as one of the most important factors in creating happiness and well-being, and modern psychology agrees.

Through talks, reflection, and meditation, we’ll explore how to recognize the skillful even when we find that hard. We’ll see how we can overcome the cynical approach of always finding the flaws in others. We’ll look at how we can support and encourage the arising of skillful qualities in ourselves and others. And we’ll see how admiration leads to emulation.

Perhaps most importantly, we’ll experience the benefits of appreciating skillful qualities in ourselves and others, and how it is the single most important way for us to bring joy and peace into our own lives and into the world.
